In the summer of 2018 we launched our first collection of Activism Pins, one of which was the popular "Science is for Everyone" pennant enamel pin. We hadn't expected it to resonate with so many people, but we quickly raised money for supporting science communication with the 40% of proceeds we set aside from each Activism pin. Most of our other activism pins raised money for established organizations like the National Immigration Law Center or Girls Who Code. We thought we'd do something a little different and we launched our own Scicomm Small Grant. We were able to support a dozen creative grassroots scicomm initiatives!
This year, we are trying something a little different. We've decided to partner up with the Massive Science Consortium which offers professional science writing training to scientists. With professional editors, they train individuals who have joined their consortium to write journalism-quality pieces and pay them after the first two articles get published. However, we all recognize that doing any unpaid work at all can be a barrier to the most marginalized. To bridge this gap, Two Photon will be paying for the two articles to be written during the training period. Along with Massive Science, we aim to increase the diversity of voices that have a professional science writing platform.
For details on how to become a Photon Fellow, join the consortium! All scientists are welcome to join, and now you can use the code "TwoPhoton" to waive the membership fee.
